Chevrolet Parts 101: CV Joints
There’s a good chance your car has constant velocity (CV) joints. If your first reaction is, “What are those?”, you’re not alone. Many car owners have never heard of these Chevrolet parts, despite the fact that they’re a key contributor to a smooth ride.
CV Joints: What are They and What do They Do?
There are two main types of CV joints: ball-type and tripod-type. Both play an important role in the transfer of torque from a car’s transmission to its wheels. This torque puts the car in motion and must be transferred smoothly and consistently. Every front-wheel drive (FWD) car at LaFontaine Chevrolet Dexter, as well as many rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) cars, come with two sets of CV joints. One set connects the drive shafts to the transmission, while the other set connects the drive shafts to the wheels.
In terms of longevity, CV joints are one of the most durable components on your car. Not only are they one of the few components that don’t require regular Chevy service, but they also last for a long time – in some cases, more than 300,000 miles.
CV Joints: Possible Repairs
While CV joints are very durable, repairs could be needed if their protective cover is damaged, and the joints are exposed to moisture and/or dirt. This could lead to corrosion, causing the joints to wear out faster. This is unlikely to happen, but if it does, it’s something that our Chevy dealers would remedy right away. Repairing a CV joint involves repacking the joint(s) with fresh grease and then affixing a new protective cover. A far likelier scenario is that around 300,000 miles, your car’s CV joints will simply need to be replaced with brand-new ones.
