What to Do if You’re in an Accident
If you have never been in a car accident, consider yourself lucky. It is always a good idea, however, to be prepared. This guide offers the steps you should take if you’re involved in a crash, from the initial incident to getting the right car or truck repair.
Get Off the Road
The first thing to do is move your Chevy Trax or whatever you’re driving as far away as you can from traffic. This is especially important if you are on the highway or a busy street. This is only applicable if you can still drive the vehicle.
The second step is to see how everybody is, including yourself. In many cases, injuries are obvious, but sometimes they are more subtle.
Call for Help
A minor fender-bender probably doesn’t count as an emergency. But a big accident certainly does. In this instance, make sure you or someone else calls 911. This is particularly important if somebody is hurt.
Talk to the Other Driver
For a 1-vehicle accident – like crashing into a telephone pole, for example – you will just need to talk to the emergency personnel who show up. If another driver is involved, however, you will need to speak to them, at the very least to get contact information. It’s important to try to keep your cool, avoid laying blame until the authorities arrive.
Take Pics and a Video
Eventually, you are going to have to talk to your insurance company. And to make sure the details you provide are as accurate as possible, it is a good idea to take pictures and maybe even a video of the damage, roadway, or anything else relevant to the accident and your claim.
